Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is in this cliché that one can start to understand the depth and complexity of what art is. For Love and Art is a nonprofit who yearns to spread an appreciation for the complexity and creativity in each brush stroke of each art piece to generate more appreciation for the craft. Joining Generations and For Love and Art combined forces to allow members of Joining Generations and the elderly to observe art pieces and create a sense of appreciation for artists.
With each mixed red, yellow, and blue in all of the different hues, each painting told a different story. While one painting might show a violent red clashing with a chilling blue, another might show a warm yellow mixing with a pastel purple. In each brush stroke, there is meaning. By walking around together, both the elderly and the younger generation were able to see the artwork from both of their lenses, enhancing their own understanding of the art.
Art has the power to challenge the status quo, to encourage us to feel emotions locked up inside us, to criticize and correct different aspects of society, and to help the artist portray a message. But because such a beautiful thing is so complex and so intertwined with emotion, deriving a story can be hard without proper understanding of empathy. Empathy is a superpower everyone is capable of, but very few people willingly yield. In understanding each other’s point of views, we build up our own empathy, and allow for enhanced understanding of art and the world that surrounds us.
